Greenpeace – Yes Men spoof newspaper declares climate deal

Readers of a free copy of the International Herald Tribune in Brussels today may have done a double take when they saw headlines like “Markets Soar on News of Copenhagen Climate Deal” and “Atmosphere Named World Heritage Site.” That’s because the newspaper, datelined six months into the future, was brought to them by Greenpeace and the Yes Men.

Unbeknownst to the folks over at the International Herald Tribune, we created the hopeful hoax and distributed 50,000 copies of the paper outside of metro stops and street cafes in major cities from New York to Beijing to Brussels. (Along with a complimentary copy and a bottle of champagne to the chief editor of the real International Herald Tribune) The headline read “Heads of State Agree Historic Climate Saving Deal.” So maybe we haven’t actually seen our leaders stand up and take responsibility for leading the global community in the fight to a climate deal; we can’t help but ask ourselves “Why not?”

Greenpeace set up camp in front of the minister’s office to question green investment scheme

Greenpeace activists from all over the Central and Eastern European region put up their tents in front of the building of the Prime Minister’s Office in Budapest to wait for the launch of the Green Investment Scheme. They wanted to draw attention to the mystery around the emissions quota income and the continuous delay of the launch of the Scheme.

“The Hungarian Green Investment Scheme can be very important in advocating energy efficiency and renewables, therefore it can significantly contribute to the fight against climate change. If our decision makers hesitate in making this money available, they practically steal money from the climate.”- said Barbara Stoll, climate and energy campaigner for Greenpeace Hungary.

Major brands implicated in Amazon destruction

A new Greenpeace report on a three-year undercover investigation into Brazil’s booming cattle industry, the single largest source of deforestation in the world and Brazil’s main source of CO2 emissions (1), has found that top food, sports and fashion brands are unwittingly driving the deforestation of the Amazon rainforest. It shows how the Brazilian government is complicit in bankrolling the destruction and is undermining efforts to tackle the global climate crisis. This went live on the evening of 31 May in Brazil just in time for the opening of the Bonn2 talks.

Bannerhanging: “If the world were a bank, you’d bail it out” -- Frankfurt, Germany

In advance to the EU Heads of State Spring Summit Greenpeace Germany activists hung a 12 x 13 m banner at the 155m high tower of the Deutsche Bank in Frankfurt saying “If the world were a bank, you’d bail it out” . Police and fire-rescue specialists for rescue from height arrived very fast and asked Greenpeace to leave the building. After long discussions they decided that it is safer to let the activists stay in place rather than trying to get them down. Result: climbers and banner stayed in place for 7 hours. Video of the action (in German):

Hundreds of activists shut in the Finance Ministers from EU Member States

On Tuesday 10 March hundreds of Greenpeace activists from across Europe blocked the exits of the building where Finance Ministers from EU Member States were discussing funding for developing nations to tackle climate change. The activists sealed the building and refused to let the politicians leave until they committed to ‘Save the Climate’ and ‘Bail out the Planet’. Of course the police were quick in responding, very quick in fact, and after two hours all activists had been removed and 357 had been arrested. Security was high, not only because it was a Ministers meeting, but also because US Vice President Biden was to join the Ministers for lunch. All arrested were released later in the day.

In all 20 offices sent activists and campaigners (Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Lebanon, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, Turkey, UK) and EDs from Belgium, Italy, Luxembourg and Nordic also participated.

Unfortunately, the Finance Ministers were very week in their recommendations to EU leaders. Although they recognized the need for funds from rich countries, including the EU, to go to developing nations they did not propose concrete public financial support for climate action and instead made an empty promise for investments from the private sector, which they can neither predict nor control.

Greenpeace activists let it all hang out at Premier’s fundraising dinner

Greenpeace activists delivered a clear message to Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach, dropping from the ceiling above the annual Edmonton Premier’s Dinner as he was delivering his fundraising speech, unveiling a banner as they descended that read: “$telmach: The Best Premier Oil Money Can Buy.”

Two climbers dangled from the catwalk, distracting the over 1000 supporters of the Alberta Conservative party, who each paid $450 to listen to Premier Stelmach speak at the dinner, held at the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton. The Greenpeace protest disrupted the activity as the audience turned their attention to the activists and the hanging banner while Tory staff hurried to deal with the unexpected message.
